The latest progress of iplayer external sub development

July 18th, 2009 | rx932hng

Previously, it has been told that iPlayer team was developping external subtitle function. Now, their progress is revealed, that subtitles setting has been added into video playing setting, besides, font colour and subtitles time offset operation of external subtitle has completed. But there are still some multinational language code problem what needs to be solved, further more, subtitles background colour function is considered to be added, so that it could avoid colour superimposition problems, if the subtitles colour is similar with the video colour around. The expected external subtitle function is believed to be coming soon.

Recently, external subtitle function is whether limited by video formats or not, what was asked on some forum. Of course not, the external subtitle function is separated from video playing, and complete independence, so whatever the video format is, you could use external subtitle function freely.

iPlayer video playing

video parameter

11

the top is the name
format: realvideo VBR
file size: 787MB
playtime: 02:09:57
resolution: 768 X 416

14

13

12

the photoes looks no good, actual effect is better than the photoes you are looking.

My opinion on iPlayer:

smoothly or not:

The handbook recommend 640×480 videos, and I do not have much too videos on my computer, so I tried a 760×416 resolution video, which plays perfect. When I move the slider to fast forward the video, in surprise there is no delay.

clear or not:

Because of DS screen resolution limitation, the playing effect is very similar with DPG, not bad. But the subtitle is the problem, when you watch a video on your PC, the subtitle is clear, but the same video on DS, it is hard to see, I am expecting the external subtitle.

Flv format videos from tudou.com :

15

the top is the name
format: flash video
file size: 2152KB
playtime: 00:01:01
resolution: 352×264

16

FLV is a popular format, easy to download from video service website such as youtube.com and tudou.com. most of FLV video’s resolution is suit with DS screen.

MPEG-4 plays no good

17

the top is the name
format: mpeg-4
file size: 561MB
playtime: 01:32:34
resolution: 480×272

18

I chose a mp4 original for PSP, and found that mp4 plays not well by iPlayer. Then I converted a 320×240 mp4 myself, this time is plays well enough. I consider it is not a resolution problem, but the format, because of former tested rmvb format and others, which resolution is higher than 720×480, plays smoothly.

Big problem: the sound is out of step

Launch YSmenu

19

21

The official claims iPlayer supports all homebrews, so I have Ysmenu in mind and copy it, but it still can not run any games. However, I think it is possible to run a game in future.

Launch moonshell

20

Moonshell launchs and plays DPG without problem by iPlayer

the effect of playing music:

22

I chose itouch, PSP, and iplayer for comparison, and earphone is from itouch set.

The result is below(my own opinion):

sound quality:touch> psp , psp=iPlayer
format supporting:iPlayer>psp , PSP>touch

For a better experience, you’d better use a earphone, the speaker of DS litsens like no better than a normal radio, and the volume is too low.

23

24

—————————-
Conclusion
—————————-
advantages:

1.Play rmvb、avi、rm、flv directly no converting,
2.compatible all homebrews, including moonshell, neoDS.

problems:

1.Because of the resolution limitation, the subtitle looks no clear, expecting external subtitle
2.MP4 playing performance is not good.
3.Because of the onboard chips, the cart will get heat after a while.

iPlayer testing for FLV

June 26th, 2009 | rx932hng

Recently, I sent dozens of applications to iPlay official for the product, finally I am lucky enough to get one iPlayer for testing. Formerly, official claimed iPlayer supports various video formats, and among these formats AVI consideriing as the stunt because of its popularity. But actually I prefer FLV. Why FLV? As we all know the flle size of FLV is small, so I think the loading speed definitely is the best advantage. Besides, Let us look more details about it.

Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLV : Flash Video is a file format used to deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player (initially produced by Macromedia) versions 6–10. Flash Video content may also be embedded within SWF files.

The format has quickly established itself as the format of choice for embedded video on the web. Notable users of the Flash Video format include YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo! Video, metacafe, Reuters.com, and many other news providers. The standards documentation for BBC Online deprecates the use of other formats previously in use on its sites[1] such as RealVideo or WMV.

Though the Flash Video container format itself is open, the codecs used with it are patented. Flash Video files usually contain material encoded with codecs following the H.263 or VP6 standards. The most recent public releases of Flash Player also support H.264 video and HE-AAC audio.

Flash Video is viewable on most operating systems, via the widely available Adobe Flash Player and web browser plugin, or one of several third-party programs such as MPlayer, VLC media player, or any player which uses DirectShow filters (such as ALLPlayer, Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player, and Windows Media Center) when the ffdshow filter is installed.

OK, now I wander the effects of FLV playing by iPlayer. Look at the informations of some FLV videos I have prepared in advance below:

First video:
Complete name atongmu.flv (the original name is expressed by Chinese character, it is from a Japanese anime named astroboy)
Format : Flash Video
File size: 1.74 MiB
PlayTime : 48s 333ms
Bit rat : 303 Kbps
Tagged_Application : Tudou.Com
Codec: Sorenson H263
Width: 352 pixels
Height: 264 pixels
Aspect ratio: 4/3
Frame rate: 15.021 fps

Actual effect:

002
(photoes)
Sorry about my camera, so the photoes itself looks no good, in
fact the actual effect is better than the photoes you are looking.

   Second video:
Complete name :last friends.flv(also have Chinese characters)
Format : Flash Video
File size : 1.65 MiB
PlayTime : 45s 133ms
Bit rate : 306 Kbps
Tagged_Application : iku
Codec : Sorenson H263
Width : 320 pixels
Height : 214 pixels
Aspect ratio : 1.495
Frame rate : 15.022 fps

Actual effect

003
Because of protection film, the screen looks a lot of
rippleon it ,but the subtitles looks very clear.

004

This video is not large. The resolution is 320 X 214, code rate is 306kbps, playing smoothly. From the first picture we could see the subtitles clearly, so I draw the conclusion that the standard resolution videos from common video service site(youtube and so on), is no problems with its subtitles.

Next a DS game trailer from game site GT, my favorite Dragon Quest 9. The resolution is perfect for DS screen.

Third video
Complete name :t_dragonq9_ovw_jp_v2.flv
Format : Flash Video
File size : 58.7 MiB
PlayTime : 7mn 14s
Bit rate : 1135 Kbps
Codec : On2 VP6
Width : 480 pixels
Height : 360 pixels
Aspect ratio : 4/3
Frame rate : 29.970 fps

Actual effect
005

006
Play smootly, but if move the scroll bar, there is pause happened.

Besides the three videos, there are more testing below:

Name
size Frame rate
Bit
resolution result
knights 19.6M 29.970fps 1148kbps 480 X 360 little frames dropped
Project Origin trailer

Final Fantasy VII Advent Children trailer
12.3M 15.001fps 247Kbps 320 X 262 smoothly

Crayon Shin Chan
1.05M 15.023 fps 293kbps 320 X 240 smoothly

2009 new Japan anime trailer collection
53.8M 11.585fps 299kbps 320 X 240 little frames dropped
DRINK IT DOWN 8.41M 15.004fps 258Kbps 320 X 240 smoothly

NARUTO 334 trailer
1.40M 14.966fps 290kbps 320 X 182 smoothly

Ice Age trailer
2.10M 15.016fps 285kbps 352 X 264 smoothly

The test results show us that most of FLV videos play well, except the first two video, knights and Project Origin trailer, which bit rate is too high, so frame dropped is not surprise. And the frame of 2009 new Japan anime trailer collection itself is low, so play effect by iPlay is the same.

Conclusions: FLV with 15fps/250-310Kbps is able to be played soomtly, subtitle also looks clearly, and it is the standard of Common video service site uploaded video. There are many advantages with FLV, including source is very abundance and popularity, file size is small, downloading convenience and so on.

The latest iPlayer review

June 23rd, 2009 | rx932hng

Prologue: DS does not lack for multimedia functionality by homebrews, Even though Nintendo itself does not give DS much too such functions. Now we already realized listening music, reading e-book, playing video on DS. And among these functions, listening music, reading e-book is considering as perfect, supporting all the popular formats. You only need to copy the files into your TF, then you can enjoy it. But the video playing function is still not very convenience. To watch video, We need the homebrew Moonshell, which supports DPG format only, so that we have to convert the videos to DPG format befor playing. Fortunately, iPlayer will be the ultimate solution for playing main format videos on DS.

【The quality of video and audio playing】

A KingSton2G TF is packed with iplayer(just for testing), which already contains a lot of supported videos. the list is below:

56407_200906221618511

In fact, MP4 and MKV is also supported, but the performance is not good, there are slow down and crackles occured in the playing process, even if the code rate and resolution is not very high. So official video player banned these two format, but we can also play it in the Files option. There is no problem to play normal AVI and RMVB, but the subtitles.

56407_200906221011473
352×288 resolution 3GP format, performance is perfect.

56407_200906221012091
524×336 resolution rmvb format, subtitles is a big problem.

The official TF provide wav, mp3, ogg, ape, and wma five formats audio files, all supported perfectly, and beside the five kinds of formats, iPlayer also supports flac, aac, m4a formats and so on. There is no EQ like common MP3 player, but obviously is better than software decoding of Moonshell.

【Homebrew】

iPlayer is not like the other flash carts supported DS commercial roms, but all homebrews is allowed to be launch. We test Colours, NeoDS and so on homebrew softwares without problem. If enable the function of soft reset in system operation, we could use L+R+A+B+X+Y to restart. Interestingly, the official TF also contains Moonshell2 in it, but for now, maybe it is just used to browse pictures and read e-books.

56407_200906221012282
Colors running is perfect

56407_200906221012281
NeoGeo simulator

【Maximum endurance】

Official claims at 2 brightness level, with earphones and maximum volume, it could proceed to watch video for four hours. We tested with DSi maximum brightness, earphones and maximum volume, proceeded for three hours. We suppose if reduce the brightness, the maximum endurance will be the standard which official claimed.

【Overall】

iPlayer is worth enough to be considered is a milestone. No converting to play main popular video formats directly, So we can take the DS as a real media player. But we are expecting the solution of subtitles.

Onboard CPU, the real attraction of iPlayer

June 19th, 2009 | rx932hng

After the E3 in early June, the media player cart for Nintendo DS actually shocked people. First of all two peices of video appeared in Youtube, showed us a mysterious device could offer playing AVI on DS directly. Then the Administrator of gaming focused website GBAtemp posted a news, confirmed the existence of the media player cart for Nintendo DS, and is named iPlayer. Unfortunately, considering the copyright problems, iPlayer does not support any commercial roms.

iPlayer could play AVI, Flv, RMVB directly, is more convenience than the homebrew Moonshell, which could play DPG format videos only. Using iPlayer, you just need to copy the videos you want to the TF card. in consideration of playing AVI directly on DS by hardware decoding, we suppose there must be a high basic frequency onboard CPU in the cart, which should more powerful than the CPU of PSP, so in my opinion, launch all the main console simulator is possilbe.

Beside the video playing, the trailer also reveal that iPlayer could be used to launch homebrew on DS. No doubt this point support my view above, meaning the DLDI is opened, so fans could develop their own homebrew on it. Even more, a few days ago AK homebrew author stated he was interested in trying to make it supporting commercial roms. All of these really make me excited.

After all, these just are my speculations. When iPlayer finally out, we should know electric energy consumption of the onboard CPU, the video playing quality, and the price.

The high basic frequency onboard CPU of iPlayer realizes our dream of playing AVI on DS directly, then will launching of GBA simulator on DS also come true? I am expecting it, faithfully.

iPlayer hands-on impressions — Plays XviD/DivX directly without converting.

June 16th, 2009 | rx932hng

iplayer official website: http://www.dsiplayer.com/

The review blow is quoted from http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=161718

The iPlayer is a slot-1 media player cart that, besides homebrew, doesn’t have any ROM loading functionality. The iPlayer is solely intended for playing media files and homebrew, unlike other flash kits on the market that just use this marketing as a ruse to cover their other possible intentions.

Even though most flash kits on the market support media playback, their functionality is often limited to a handful of audio codecs and DPG video – a video format that is optimised for the DS. All DPG videos must be converted on the users PC using software before copying across to what ever slot-1 cart you are using. This is required because the DS CPU is simply not powerful enough to handle playback of the usual file formats you’ll find online videos distributed in.

To combat this issue, the iPlayer has a built in CPU and extra RAM that enables it to decode various file formats on the fly, thus allowing the end user to view them back on the DS without prior conversion.

The iPlayer supports a variety of codecs including DivX, Xvid, Quicktime, Windows Media video, Realmedia, MPEG, ASF, VOB and Flash video. Other formats actually work, but are either unstable or just playback at a speed too slow to watch (see MP4, h264 etc.). MKV container formats are not available for playback when viewing files under the ‘Video’ menu but can still be loaded under the ‘Files’ menu, though most heavy duty formats in such containers, such as h264 for example, are simply not able to run at a decent speed. And for files with multiple audio tracks, only the primary audio track will play. You can not
switch between audio tracks. Regarding subtitle support; contained and external subtitle files are not supported.

The majority of standard formats such as XviD, Realmedia etc. unless encoded at a ridiculously high bit rate actually play back surprisingly well. There are a few dropped frames and I’ve experienced a few sudden skips, but these are far and few between. Audio is also very good, and sound is outputted in stereo on the DS speakers, but the volume is ridiculously low when not using headphones. Fortunately you can increase the volume percentage to 200% to make it play at a level that’s comfortable to listen to, but even at that volume it’s still only equal to that of most DS games.

Video quality is very good and actually looks rather stunning on the DS Lite/DSi LCD screens, even with the limited colour palette. A good quality video file will look very crisp and clear (even so much that it makes the video compression artifacts so much more obvious!). Video plays back on the top screen, while the bottom screen shows the standard player controls and file info. The screens backlight turns off after a while to focus attention to the top screen.

Regarding video frame size, you can choose to make the file play in its native aspect ratio (which, for widescreen movies makes it look ridiculously small), or you can set it to stretch the video window to fill the DS screen, but then this makes widescreen videos look too stretched. There is no option to view widescreen videos in 4:3 mode by cropping to the centre.

I was actually quite impressed at the iPlayer’s ability to keep the video and audio synced while I watched a few sample clips. That was, until I started seeking back and forth within the video using either the d-pad or on screen slider. The audio and video then become separated by about a second and make watching quite frustrating, and will stay that way until you completely restart the video. Whether or not this is dependant on the file codec, bit rate or even the speed of the micro SD card is still unclear.

Another feature I assumed would be present, but was surprised to not see, was a bookmark feature, to save your position when watching a long film or podcast for example.

Audio playback works just as expected and is fine. The formats tested so far include MP3, WAV, OGG, Ape and WMA which all work fine.

DLDI supported homebrew is supported and is automatically patched. Soft-reset is supported.

The Settings menu allows you to change Brightness, Language (Eng/Chi), Skin, Backlight fade time, DLDI patching and soft-reset.

The iPlayer is built off of Acekard 2 hardware and firmware. The GUI is nice and clean and works well, but it would be nice if it showed more advanced details on the files you are playing, such as ID3 tags, codec, bit rate etc. The touch screen responsiveness of the GUI is less than accurate and it sometimes takes several taps of an item to get it to take effect.

Overall, first impressions are pretty good. The cart does what it says on the tin, and does it fairly well. While it may choke on higher bit rate files or certain file formats, it plays a wide variety well (Xvid, DivX, RM) and the ease of use really makes up for the lack of features. Hopefully a software upgrade could further improve file performance and fix issues such as sync-loss after tracking, audio volume and GUI responsiveness issues. The team have told me they do indeed plan to improve the software and our taking our criticism seriously.

This was just a quick hands-on impressions, and we plan to release our full written review some time in the future. Stay tuned to GBAtemp.net for the latest exclusive news and information on the latest DS hardware.

Note: This is a production sample iPlayer. The label is a temporary one and is subject to change, as is the plastic casing.
